The past 16, 17 & 18 of December , Startup Weekend Space took place in Microsoft Offices in Buenos Aires, gathering entrepreneurs, students , technicians and distinct profiles during a weekend to create space startups using satellite data , it was the first event of its kind in the region.
With the support of local universities, entrepreneurs communities, local space companies , various specialists and Copernicus Representatives/Relays in Argentina (Space Latam), participants came together for 54 consecutive hours in order to develop their ideas from zero to an MVP(Minimum Viable Product), including the business model and the customer validation during this time. The objective? Not just create startups, but kickstart this satellite data industry in Latin America.
Sunday afternoon, teams were judged by investors, successful entrepreneurs and technical authorities. The first place was for SatelAgro ( Platform that use satellite images to optimize the application of agrochemicals and monitor their impact) , second place for Agrofit (Platform that analyzes the health of the fields using sensors, satellites and drones), and finally the third place went for Estaciona.ba (Intelligent search and parking payment application).
“Latin America has the potential of being one of the leaders in the creation of companies based on satellite data thanks to the local necessities of the industry and the friendly growing entrepreneurial ecosystem, it’s just a matter of creating the right conditions for opportunities to develop.” Said José Medina, one of the organizers of the event and Copernicus Relay for Argentina.
